How to Clean a French Press

French Presses make a smooth, rich cup of coffee that even non-coffee lovers can enjoy. They are made out of glass and metal; not a scrap of plastic anywhere. However, even glass and metal can turn out a murky cuppa if it hasn't been cleaned properly.

My husband was introduced to French Press coffee by the wife of his multi-millionaire boss, who enjoyed pretending how just-folks they were over a company dinner at Christmas time. Mrs Boss poured my husband a steaming cup of coffee. He took a sip and immediately began plans to buy his very own French Press. He asked Mrs Boss if it could be put in the dishwasher. Mrs B looked confused. "I..." she mused, "don't...know...". I wanted to suggest that we could call her cook and ask, but Mr Boss hadn't passed out the Christmas bonuses yet.

We found out, after buying my husband his very own French Press, in the handy how-to book included with the coffee pot, and a bit of intrepid kitchen experience.

How to Clean a French Press

Yes, a French Press can go in the Dishwasher, Mrs Boss.

Most manufacturers prefer that the French Press goes in the top rack. That means no trying to stuff the press part into your silverware holder; it will warp and sulk and not work any more.

You can also wash it by hand.

Submerge all your coffee accoutrement (this is an record about a French Press, I must use at least one French word!) in nice hot water. Take a soft, soapy rag and scrub your coffee pot. Be a bit more diplomatic with the press part, but make sure everything is perfectly clean and dried. You won't get a decent cup of coffee out of a dingy coffee maker, French or not. Actually, that last sentence was probably the most prominent in the whole article; it would probably be a good idea if you memorized it.

I have only one last recommendation on how to clean a French Press:

Have your cook wash it. This would, for most of us, entail winning a lottery. Good luck!
